Charity auction features Ken Danby's 'At The Crease' hand-painted on goalie mask

Cultural icon is joined by Patrick Roy and other Canadian hockey heroes for unique auction

Toronto (November 10, 2006) – The art of painting goalie masks has a new benchmark.
Canadian artist Ken Danby has ingeniously interpreted his famous goalie painting 'At The Crease' in three dimensions, hand-painting his famous hockey image on a new type of canvas: a goalie mask.  Now hockey, art and memorabilia collectors around the world have a chance to own this original, one-of-a-kind masterpiece which is destined, like the 1972 painting, to become a symbol of our hockey heritage.

The Source For Sports One-of-a-Kind Mask Auction, at www.nhl.com/ was launched today at Toronto's Hockey Hall of Fame. The auction runs from November 10 – 24, 2006.

Also up for bidding are original, hand-painted or air-brushed masks signed by 2006 Hockey
Hall of Fame inductee Patrick Roy, the 2006 Team Canada World Junior Hockey Champions, the 2006 Olympic Women's Hockey Gold Medalists and the 2006 Paralympics Sledge Hockey Gold Medallists.  Proceeds go to Shoot For A Cure, a campaign of the Canadian and American Spinal Research Organizations, which fund research to prevent and cure spinal cord injuries. Source For Sports®, one of Canada's largest sporting goods retailers, has raised more than $500,000 for its National Charity Shoot For A Cure since their partnership began in 2003.

"We're very fortunate to have Ken Danby's support, as well as the support of our other artists.  I actually have Ken’s print 'At The Crease' and to see it painted on a goalie mask is truly amazing.  It is an original work of art that will draw the attention of both hockey memorabilia and art collectors.  Ken loves hockey and was thrilled to offer his time and talents in support of our cause," says Paul La Vigne, Marketing Manger for Source For Sports®.  “We are also very grateful to Susie Matthias for painting a mask again this year as well as Mark Hart, Vince Goodeve and VooDoo Airbrushing who have painted their first masks for the One Of A Kind Mask Auction.”

The November auction is part of Shoot For A Cure Month at Source For Sports® that also includes a Skate Sharpening Day at some 145 retail locations, that will see proceeds from all skates sharpened donated to Shoot For A Cure. Integral partners to the success of the auction include Itech Hockey, who donated the masks, and the Hockey Hall Of Fame, where the masks will be on display until November 2007, Phil Pritchard, the Hall's curator says the celebrity masks will complement the existing collection, which includes masks worn by some of the game's greatest goalies.

"Source For Sports® is our largest partner," says Barry Munro, chairman of Shoot For A Cure. "It's a perfect fit for us to tie into their strong affiliation with the hockey community across Canada."  The Source For Sports One Of A Kind Mask Auction has proved popular with sport and memorabilia collectors. The 2004 inaugural auction gave rise to the most expensive goalie mask in history, after an online gambling site paid $16,000 USD for a hand-painted mask by Hockey Night in Canada's Don Cherry.

Shoot For A Cure and Source For Sports® invite the hockey lover, art lovers and all Canadians to take part in the third annual Source For Sports One Of A Kind Mask Auction: www.nhl.com

Spinal Cord Injury FACTS

Approximately 600,000 Canadian youth play minor hockey. Almost every week during the regular hockey season a player (amateur or professional) suffers a serious spinal injury. From 1982 – 1996, Canada reported 252 hockey related major spinal cord injuries, followed by Sweden with 54 and the United States with 36. Most of those injuries were sustained by players 16 to 20 years of age who were playing in supervised games, reinforcing the necessity
of targeting the minor hockey community with the message of skilled and respectful play.
